
Ari Ben-Menahem, a German-born Israeli mathematician and geophysicist, died on April 9, 2026.
He was 97. Born in Berlin on November 4, 1928, he was a professor of mathematics and geophysics at the Weizmann Institute of Science from 1964 and also served as a visiting professor at MIT.
Ben-Menahem was a seismologist, author, polymath, and historian of science. He received a master’s degree in physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1954 and a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in 1961.
