Stephen M.

Schwebel, an American jurist and judge who served on the International Court of Justice from 1981 to 2000, died on April 9, 2026. He was vice president of the court from 1994 to 1997 and president from 1997 to 2000.

Schwebel, born in New York City on March 10, 1929, also served as judge of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal from 2010 to 2017, president of the International Monetary Fund Administrative Tribunal from 1993 to 2010, and a member of the U.S. National Group at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
