Bruno Schrecker, the German-born British cellist, died on August 23, 2026, aged 97.
Born in Frankfurt on August 27, 1928, he was the son of Robert Schrecker and Lisl Bischitsky. His Jewish parents took the family first to Prague and then to England, where they settled in Wimbledon, London, in 1935.
Schrecker studied at the Royal College of Music on a scholarship and went on to perform with the Peter Gibbs Quartet and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam. Returning to London in the late 1950s, he formed the Oromonte String Trio with the violinists Margaret Major and Perry Hart. In 1967 he succeeded William Pleeth in the Allegri Quartet, with which he later made recordings including Elgar’s Piano Quintet and Britten’s string quartets.
