Bernard Haitink, the Dutch conductor and violinist, died on October 21, 2021, aged 92.
Born Bernard Johan Herman Haitink in Amsterdam, he studied violin and conducting at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam before beginning his career as an orchestral musician and conductor. He became principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1961 and later held leading posts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Glyndebourne Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Haitink was also a frequent presence at the Proms in London, where he gave 90 concerts, the last in 2019 with the Vienna Philharmonic. His extensive recordings centered on symphonies and orchestral works, while his awards included Grammy Awards and a 2015 Gramophone Award for lifetime achievement.
