António Lobo Antunes, the Portuguese novelist and medical doctor, died on March 5, 2026, in Lisbon, Portugal, at age 83.
Born in Lisbon on September 1, 1942, he studied at the University of Lisbon and graduated as a medical doctor in 1969, later specializing in psychiatry. He was the author of The Land at the End of the World and received the 2000 Austrian State Prize, the 2003 Ovid Prize, the 2005 Jerusalem Prize, the 2007 Camões Prize and the 2008 Juan Rulfo Prize.
He was also repeatedly nominated as a contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
