Antonino Zichichi, an Italian physicist, died on February 9, 2026.
He worked in nuclear physics and served as president of the World Federation of Scientists and as a professor at the University of Bologna. Born in Trapani, Sicily, on October 15, 1929, he studied physics at the University of Palermo after attending the Ximenes classical high school in Trapani.
Zichichi collaborated on several discoveries in sub-nuclear physics and worked in research laboratories including Fermilab in Chicago and CERN in Geneva. In 1965, he led the research group that first observed the antideuteron, simultaneously with an American team at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
