Alexander Yanchulev, a Bulgarian politician and civil engineer who served in the Grand National Assembly from 1990 to 1991 and later as mayor of Sofia from 1991 to 1996, died on June 9, 2026.

He was 87. Born in Sofia in 1938, Yanchulev trained as a hydraulic engineer at the Civil Engineering Institute, now part of the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy.

He went on to work as a university lecturer and became active in politics after the end of communist rule in Bulgaria, joining the Union of Democratic Forces. In October 1991, he was elected as Sofia’s first democratically chosen mayor.
