Born in Sofia on October 7, 1938, Alexander Stefanov Yanchulev studied hydraulic engineering at the Civil Engineering Institute, later becoming a university lecturer and writer. He entered public life after the fall of communist rule in Bulgaria and joined the Union of Democratic Forces.

In October 1991, he won Sofia’s first direct mayoral election, becoming the city’s first democratically elected mayor, and served in the post until 1995. He was also a member of the 7th Grand National Assembly, which helped adopt Bulgaria’s current constitution.
