Born in Moscow on October 27, 1939, she built a career across poetry, drama and film writing, and was among the Soviet- and Azerbaijani-era literary figures whose work reached both page and screen. She studied at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute, later adding screenwriting training, and her early poems first appeared in print in 1957.
Akhundova was also known for screenplays including Shared Bread, Car, Violin and Blot the Dog, and Along Unknown Paths. Over the course of her career, she received the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR and was named an Honored Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR.
