Born in Asker on 11 November 1944, he competed mainly in four-man events and represented Norway at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games. Berger won an Olympic gold medal in 1968 and placed third at the 1972 Games.

He also won a world title in 1970 and a European title in 1969. He died in Bærum.
