Jim Irvine dead at age 85, public figure

Jim Irvine, the Scottish footballer who played for Dundee United, Middlesbrough and Barrow, died on May 18, 2026, aged 85.

Irvine, who was a forward, appeared in the Scottish Football League for Dundee United and Heart of Midlothian and in The Football League for Middlesbrough and Barrow. Raised in West Lothian, he attended St Mary’s School in Bathgate and was capped by Scotland at Schoolboy level.

After playing junior football for Whitburn Juniors, he began his senior career with Dundee United on a part-time basis while completing a motor mechanic apprenticeship.
