Thérèse Brenet, the French composer and educator, died on September 5, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Paris in 1935, she studied piano at the Conservatoire de Reims and later at the Conservatoire de Paris, where she worked with Maurice Duruflé, Henri Dutilleux, Darius Milhaud and Jean Rivier. In 1965 she won the Prix de Rome for Les Visions prophétiques de Cassandre, which took her to the French Academy in Rome.
Brenet also received the Halphen Prize for fugue and composition and wrote around 80 works, drawing on tonal and atonal techniques, quarter-tones, aleatory sequences and extended instrumental effects in music shaped by nature, astronomy, religion and literature.
