Born in Rennes on September 7, 1930, he entered the Jesuit order in 1951. Two years later he was serving in the military, first in Madagascar and then in Algeria, where he later became known for an anonymous 1956 testimony describing torture by French armed forces during the Algerian War.
His account was reprinted by anti-war writers and cited in later works on torture and the French state. Hutin died in Brittany.
