Sir Peter Newsam, the British educationist and former chief education officer, died on December 5, 2023, aged 95.

Also known as Sir Peter Anthony Newsam, he was educated at the Dragon School, Clifton College and The Queen’s College, Oxford, where he read philosophy, politics and economics. He began his career as a teacher, including a period back at the Dragon School from 1956 to 1958, before taking senior posts in public education.

Newsam served as chief education officer for the Inner London Education Authority from 1975 to 1981, then chaired the Commission for Racial Equality from 1981 to 1985. He later became secretary to the Association of County Councils and, from 1989 to 1994, director of the Institute of Education at the University of London, where he helped oversee an extension that now houses the Newsam Library.
