Born Robert Eugene Lanou Jr. on February 13, 1928, in Colchester, Vermont, he studied at the University of Vermont before enlisting in the U.S.
Navy in 1946. After his discharge, he earned a ScB in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and a PhD from Yale University in 1957. Lanou joined the Brown University physics department in 1959 and remained on the faculty until 2015. During his career, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1966 and a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1968.
