Hughes, an American chemist, died on August 27, 2026, aged 85. Born Robert Clark Hughes on November 27, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, he studied chemistry at Carleton College before earning a doctorate at Stanford University.

He later joined Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a postdoctoral fellow and worked there with several research groups. Hughes was named a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1982. His work included contributions to field-effect transistors, chemical sensors, temperature sensors and gas-level detection, and he served as senior scientist at Sandia in 1997 before retiring in 2003.
