Ray Gripper, the Zimbabwean cricketer, died October 28, 2026, aged 88.

Born Raymond Arthur Gripper on July 7, 1938, he made his debut for Rhodesia in the 1957–58 season and became a regular member of the side over a 15-year period. A right-handed opening batsman, he played 83 first-class matches for Rhodesia in the Currie Cup between 1957–58 and 1971–72, captaining the team at one stage.

Gripper held his place for eight consecutive years from 1958, then missed a match against Transvaal in 1966 before later returning to the side. His highest score came in 1967–68, when he made 279 not out against Orange Free State. The innings set a Currie Cup record that stood for several years and was the standout score of his playing career. Before focusing on cricket, Gripper worked as a farmer. His son Trevor also opened the batting and represented Zimbabwe in Test and one-day international cricket. Ray’s career with Rhodesia preceded his son’s appearances for Zimbabwe, linking the family to two eras of cricket in the region.
