He was 94. Born in Artemisa on April 28, 1932, Valdés became one of the early figures of the Cuban Revolution, fighting alongside Fidel Castro in the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks and later joining the founding of the 26th of July Movement.

He also took part in the Granma expedition and was among the 12 who survived its initial landing. In the years that followed, he held senior posts in the Cuban government, including serving as a vice president after Raúl Castro’s 2009 reshuffle, and remained a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo for decades.
