Mario Mestril, a Cuban Roman Catholic prelate who served as auxiliary bishop of Camagüey and later bishop of Ciego de Ávila, died on October 1, 2026, aged 86.
Born Mario Eusebio Mestril Vega in Nuevitas, Cuba, on March 5, 1940, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Camagüey on August 4, 1964. Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Camagüey and titular bishop of Cediae in 1991, and he held those offices until 1996, when he became the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Ciego de Ávila.
He retired in 2017.
