Born Philip Francis Pepe on March 21, 1935, in Brooklyn, he spent more than five decades covering sports in New York City as a baseball writer and radio voice. A graduate of St.
John’s University, he joined the New York World-Telegram in 1957 and later served as the Yankees beat writer in 1961, the season Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record. Pepe remained with the World-Telegram & Sun until the newspaper folded in 1966, and later worked as an author and broadcaster.
