
Peter Stämpfli, a Swiss painter associated with Pop art, died on February 20, 2026, in Paris, France, at the age of 88.
Born in Deisswil bei Münchenbuchsee, Bern, in 1937, he was known especially for paintings, sculptures and mixed-media works featuring auto tires and tire treads. A student of Max von Mühlenen, Stämpfli held numerous exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Basel and the Biennale de Paris.
After a fire destroyed his studio and much of his work in 1990, he later opened a foundation in Sitges in 2011, which houses a collection of his works and those of other artists.
