Born Nicola Carlo Perrone in Bari on April 27, 1935, he became known for his work on Italian political history, including his reported discovery of papers connected to the plot to kill Enrico Mattei, the state oil executive. Perrone was the author of about twenty books and dozens of shorter essays published in Italy, Denmark and the United States, and he also contributed extensively to newspapers in Italy and Switzerland.
