Moncho Monsalve, the Spanish basketball player and coach who played for Real Madrid and CB Girona and later coached Brazil’s national team, died on April 28, 2026.

Born José Manuel Monsalve on January 1, 1945, in Medina del Campo, Spain, he was a professional player before moving into coaching. As a player, he also appeared for Atlético San Sebastián and SD Kas, and he retired in 1971 because of injuries.

In 2008, Monsalve succeeded Lula Ferreira as Brazil’s head coach and led the team at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship, where Brazil won the gold medal. He also coached several clubs in Spain and France, as well as the Castile and León autonomous basketball team.
