Mohammed Harbi, an Algerian historian and former member of the National Liberation Front during the Algerian War of Independence, died on January 1, 2026.
Born on June 16, 1933, in El Harrouch, Algeria, he came from a wealthy family and later attended high school in Skikda. He was influenced by his history teacher, Pierre Souyri, and at age 15 joined the Movement for the Triumph of Democrati… After independence, Harbi served as an adviser to President Ahmed Ben Bella and later as a member of his cabinet, where he helped develop agricultural reform and policy.
In September 1963, he became an editor at the FLN newspaper Révolution Africaine.
