He was 83. Shur was born on November 13, 1942, in Kamensk-Uralsky, then in the USSR, and later became a professor of solid state electronics and electrical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the St. Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute, received his Ph.D. in physics from the A.F. Ioffe Institute in 1967, and was awarded a Dr. Sc. degree there in 1993. Over the course of his career, he held research or faculty appointments at the A.F. Ioffe Institute, Wayne State University, Oakland University, Cornell University, IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Virginia, where he served as the John Money Professor and director of the Applied Electrophysics Laboratories.
