Michael Sather Canadian politician, MLA dead at age 78

Michael Sather, a Canadian politician who served as MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows in British Columbia, died on March 26, 2026.

He was a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2005, winning re-election in 2009. Born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, in 1947 or 1948, Sather moved to British Columbia in 1974.

He held a bachelor of science degree in biology and a master’s degree in psychology, and worked on fishing boats and oil rigs, operated a wilderness tourism business, and later worked as a mental health therapist. In 2008, he ran for mayor of Maple Ridge and finished second.

Michael Sather (1947 or 1948 – March 27, 2026) was a Canadian politician who was a MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows in the province of British Columbia. As a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 2005 election, and was re-elected in 2009.
