Michael F. Robinson English composer dead at age 92

Michael F.

Robinson, an English composer, died on February 28, 2026. Born in Gloucester on March 3, 1933, he was also a musicologist and academic best known for his scholarly work on Italian opera, particularly Neapolitan opera of the 17th and 18th centuries.

He studied at New College, Oxford, where he earned degrees including a BA, BMus, MA and DPhil, and later received the Oxford Doctor of Music degree by examination in October 2009. Robinson held posts at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, McGill University and Cardiff University, where he served as head of department from 1987 to 1994.

Michael Finlay Robinson (3 March 1933 – 18 February 2026) was an English composer, musicologist and academic best known for his scholarly work on Italian opera, particularly Neapolitan opera of the 17th and 18th centuries.
