Mercy Williams, an Indian politician and former mayor of Kochi, died on November 19, 2014, in Kochi.
Born in Kochi in 1947, she began her career as a teacher before entering public life and went on to become the 16th Mayor of Kochi, the first woman to hold the post. A member of the Left Democratic Front, she won the mayoral election by an open ballot against United Democratic Front candidate Winnie Abraham, taking 47 votes to 23 from members of the Kochi corporation council.
On the council, she represented the municipal corporation’s 36th division, Kunnumpuram, and later served as a lecturer and head of the sociology department at St. Teresa’s College after earning a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Kerala.
