Born on July 28, 1953, in Ahilyanagar, she came from Maharashtra’s Kolhati community and worked across folk art, theatre, film and television. She left school as a child and accompanied her father, himself a performing artist, to shows; she began performing at a young age.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Kambikar appeared in more than 75 films and became one of the leading actresses of the 1980s. Her work also included theatre and television, alongside her screen roles and folk performances. She received a Filmfare Marathi Award and six Maharashtra State Film Awards. Kambikar was the aunt of the late Kishor Shantabai Kale. On November 27, 2016, she fell unconscious during a lavani-tamasha performance at Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai, and was hospitalized. Her career, which began in 1980, connected live folk performance with work on stage and screen, across several forms of entertainment in Maharashtra.
