More about Cheruvayal Raman
Cheruvayal Raman, an Indian tribal farmer from Wayanad district in Kerala, died October 14, 2026, aged 74.
Known as the guardian of rare seeds, he conserved more than 55 varieties of rice on his small farm at Kammana. The collection made his work distinctive: he maintained these rice varieties despite having no knowledge of agricultural science or botany.
Raman began farming on 40 acres of land given to him by his uncle. His farming and seed conservation were carried out on the land where he worked, with the Kammana farm serving as the setting for his collection of rice varieties. In January 2023, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honour. The recognition came after years of preserving rare seeds through his farming. Born in Wayanad, Kerala, Raman’s work was associated with the district and with the small farm at Kammana where he conserved the varieties. His collection of more than 55 kinds of rice was the central feature of his work as a farmer and seed conservator.
