Born Mary Genevieve Gaudron in Moree, New South Wales, she became the first woman appointed to the High Court of Australia and served on the court from 1987 until 2003. Before that appointment, she was Solicitor-General of New South Wales from 1981 to 1987.
After retiring from the bench, she later joined the International Labour Organization and served as president of its Administrative Tribunal from 2011 to 2014.
