Lawrence J.
Ryan, an Australian-born scholar of German literature, died on April 5, 2026, at age 93 in Tübingen, Germany. Born in Sydney on December 20, 1932, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sydney in 1953 and received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen in 1958.
He was professor of German at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, until his retirement in 1996, and later served as an honorary professor of German at the University of Tübingen.
