Kofi Wayo, a Ghanaian businessman and politician, died on November 7, 2026, aged 71.
Born Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, he was born around 1955 in Kofi Pare, in Ghana’s Eastern Region; his parents were uncertain of his exact birth date. His father, Kwashie Akakpo, was a cocoa farmer and soldier, and his mother, Dede Aku, came from Doryumu in the Greater Accra Region.
Wayo was the eldest of ten children. After the family moved to Nima, a suburb of Accra, he worked as a hawker during his childhood. He later settled in Detroit, Michigan, where he took on jobs including washing cars before moving into gun sales and becoming an arms dealer. In 1988, he sold his gun-trading company and entered the oil business. In Ghanaian politics, Wayo led the United Renaissance Party. His public life thus spanned business ventures abroad and political leadership at home, while the available biographical account traces his path from a childhood in Accra to work in Detroit and later business activity in oil.
