Also known as Kenneth George McCurrach, he was born on January 1, 1946. McCurrach learned the game as a schoolboy at Harris Academy in Dundee and went on to represent Combined Scottish Universities while at Dundee University before moving to Perth, Western Australia, in 1969.

He played in Perth for the University of Western Australia and Perth-Bayswater, and later joined Eastwood after relocating to Sydney in 1973. As a member of the Western Australian state team, he faced the All Blacks, the Springboks and France, and his move to Sydney brought him into contention for Wallabies selection.
