Born in Leknes on January 13, 1939, she studied at the University of Bergen, where she earned a cand.mag. in 1962 and a cand.polit.
in 1972. After teaching mathematics in secondary school in Mosjøen until 1967, she returned to Bergen and went on to join the Institute for Sociology at the University of Bergen in 1974, later becoming professor in 1987. Wærness, who was born in Norway and spent much of her career at the University of Bergen, was recognized with the Prices of the Norwegian Association of Sociology and was made a Knight First Class of the Order of St. Olav.
