Amund Sjøbrend, the Norwegian Olympic speed skater, died October 4, 2026, aged 73.
Born Amund Martin Sjøbrend on December 1, 1952, in Slåstad, he became one of Norway’s leading all-round skaters of the 1970s and early 1980s. Alongside Sten Stensen, Kay Stenshjemmet and Jan Egil Storholt, he formed the celebrated quartet known as the “four S-es,” a name that sounds like “four aces” in Norwegian.
The four were among the country’s top skaters during a period when Sjøbrend’s international achievements were initially less prominent than those of his teammates. His first major international success came in 1974, when he won silver at the European Allround Championships. He represented Norway at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, although he had no success there. Sjøbrend’s strongest season came in 1981, when he won both the European Allround Championship and the World Allround Championship. Those titles marked a high point in a career that had begun with a European silver medal and included participation at the Winter Games. In recognition of his accomplishments, he received the Oscar Mathisen Award in 1981. His championship season brought him into focus alongside the three compatriots with whom he had long been associated as one of the four S-es.
