Born in Xai-Xai, then in Portuguese Mozambique, on October 27, 1927, he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques on June 9, 1957 after studying at seminaries in Magude and Namaacha. He later served as bishop of Xai-Xai from 1976 to 2004 and was made a cardinal in 2015.
