Born on March 31, 1948, in Yagō, he was also known by his Korean name, Noh Cho Woong, and by the name Umehara Hatsuo. Royama became a master of Kyokushin Karate and served as kancho, or director, of the Kyokushin-kan International Organization Honbu, later holding the title of kaicho, or honorary director, until April 2022.
