John Fisher Burns Journalist dead at age 81

John Fisher Burns, a British journalist and longtime London bureau chief for The New York Times, died on March 12, 2026.

He was 81. Burns won two Pulitzer Prizes during a career that began in the 1970s and continued until 2015, when he covered international issues for The New York Times.

Born in Nottingham, England, he studied at Stowe School and later earned a degree in political science and economics from McGill University. He also wrote for The Globe and Mail in Canada and frequently appeared on PBS. He was sometimes called the dean of American foreign correspondents.

John Fisher Burns (4 October 1944 – 12 March 2026) was a British journalist, and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. He was the London bureau chief for The New York Times, where he covered international issues until March 2015. Burns also frequently appeared on PBS. He was sometimes referred to as “the dean of American foreign correspondents”.
