Born in Fairfield, California, on October 7, 1958, he began music studies in Belleville, Illinois, where he worked with clarinet, saxophone, flute and voice before turning his attention to the saxophone. He later studied at Florida State University’s College of Music, pursuing the instrument’s original tone and range as conceived by Adolphe Sax.
Kelly went on to a 30-year international career as a classical saxophonist; his teachers included Sigurd Raschèr. He died in Vero Beach, Florida.
