Born in Moscow on October 1, 1929, she studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where Heinrich Neuhaus was among her teachers, and later taught there as a professor. Gornostayeva also gave masterclasses in Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States.

Alongside her performing career, she wrote Two Hours After the Concert, which was translated and published abroad. At the time of her death, she was an Emeritus Artist of the Russian Federation.
