João Abel Manta dead at age 98, Portuguese architect, painter, and cartoonist

João Abel Manta, Portuguese architect, painter and cartoonist, died on May 15, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born in Lisbon on Jan. 29, 1928, he graduated in architecture from the Lisbon Higher School of Fine Arts in 1951.

He was the son of the painters Abel Manta and Maria Clementina Carneiro de Moura Manta, and was married to Maria Alice Ribeiro, with whom he had a daughter, Isabel. He lived and worked in Lisbon and was associated from an early stage with the Lisbon intellectual milieu linked to left-wing movements opposed to the Salazar and Marcelo Caetano dictatorships.
