Born James William Collier in Van Buren, Arkansas, he attended Van Buren High School before playing college football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Giants selected him in the seventh round of the 1961 NFL draft, and he was also chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 31st round of the 1962 AFL draft.
