Born Jerry Alban Lamb in Denver, Colorado, on September 4, 1940, he was the sixth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. Lamb studied at St.

Thomas Seminary in Denver, earning degrees in philosophy and theology, later completed a master’s degree in counseling at the University of Oregon, and was received into the Episcopal Church before his ordination to the diaconate in March 1977 and to the priesthood later that year. He was elected bishop coadjutor in 1991, consecrated that June, and became diocesan bishop on January 1, 1992, a post he held until 2006. That year he also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific.
