Ian Berry, the English photojournalist who documented some of the defining moments of apartheid-era South Africa, died on September 13, 2026, aged 91.
Born in Preston in 1934, he built his reputation after moving to South Africa in 1952 and working first for the Daily Mail and later for Drum magazine. Berry was the only photographer to record the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, and his images were later used in court to help demonstrate the victims’ innocence.
Invited by Henri Cartier-Bresson to join Magnum Photos in 1962 while based in Paris, he became a full member five years later.
