Born on July 25, 1919, he came from Turek in Greater Poland and moved with his family to Łódź when he was about 14. After the Łódź Ghetto was established in early 1940, the family lived in an apartment they had purchased from a local resident and continued their sewing workshop there.
When the ghetto was liquidated in August 1944, the family was sent to Auschwitz; his parents and elder brother Gabriel were murdered there, while his sister Yocheved was drowned at Stutthof and his brother Chaim Moshe was also killed.
