Hugh McIlvanney, the Scottish sports journalist who became one of Britain’s best-known writers on sport, died on January 24, 2019, aged 84.

Born in Kilmarnock on February 2, 1934, he spent three decades on The Observer before moving to The Sunday Times, where he remained for 23 years until 2016. He retired in March 2016 after nearly six decades in the profession.

McIlvanney was recognised with an OBE and was later honoured by both the English Football Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
