Born in Kilmarnock on February 2, 1934, he built a long career in British newspaper journalism, spending 30 years with The Observer until 1993 before moving to The Sunday Times, where he worked for another 23 years until 2016. He retired in March 2016 after nearly six decades in the profession.
McIlvanney was honoured with an OBE and was also recognised by both the English Football Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
