Harry Tsuchidana, an American painter, died October 20, 2026, aged 94.
Also known as Harry Suyemi Tsuchidana, he was born in Waipahu, Hawaii, where his parents owned a two-acre farm. After graduating from high school in 1952, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Following his discharge in 1955, he enrolled at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and later moved to New York City to study at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Pratt Contemporary Graphic Arts Center. While taking classes, Tsuchidana worked as a guard and custodian at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and as a night watchman at the Museum of Modern Art. He received a John Hay Whitney Fellowship in 1959. Though known primarily for abstract painting, his work also included printmaking and photography. His drawings and prints often covered the paper’s surface with monochromatic lines of varying thicknesses; Topographic Landscape is one example. The Stage Series, another body of his paintings, features a single horizontal line. These works reflect the range of media and approaches represented in his practice, from surface-filling line compositions to paintings organized around a lone horizontal mark.
