George R.

Rossman, an American mineralogist and academic, died on February 6, 2026, at the age of 81. He was the Professor of Mineralogy at the California Institute of Technology.

Born George Robert Rossman on August 3, 1944, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he soon moved to Eau Claire. He graduated as salutatorian from high school there, won first place in the 1961 Wisconsin Junior Academy of Science competition, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and mathematics from Wisconsin State University–Eau Claire, now the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, from 1962 to 1966.

George Robert Rossman (August 3, 1944 – February 6, 2026) was an American mineralogist and academic who was the Professor of Mineralogy at the California Institute of Technology.
