George Chuvalo, the Canadian boxer who became a five-time national heavyweight champion and a two-time world title challenger, died on September 12, 2026, at age 89.
Born in Toronto in 1937, Chuvalo built a career marked by durability and consistency over 93 professional bouts, never being knocked down even in contests against Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. He challenged Ali for the heavyweight championship in 1966 and later was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
Known also as George Louis Chuvalo, he was honored as a Member of the Order of Canada and was named to Canada’s Walk of Fame and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
