Georg Baselitz, German painter and sculptor, died on April 30, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Germany, on January 23, 1938, he was also a graphic artist. He became known in the 1960s for figurative, expressive paintings, and in 1969 began painting subjects upside down as part of his effort to move away from representational, content-driven work and emphasize the artifice of painting.
